MARK DANTONIO : Michigan St. |
Mark Dantonio established himself as one of the nation's up-and-coming coaches during his three-year tenure at Cincinnati. In 2006, Dantonio led the Bearcats to a 7-5 overall record and a 4-3 BIG EAST mark, making Cincinnati bowl eligible for the second time in three years. Dantonio accomplished the feat against the second-toughest schedule in the country, as UC's opponents compiled a 69-42 record. Dantonio compiled an 18-17 overall record in his three years at Cincinnati and led the program in its transition to the BIG EAST Conference. He became the first head coach in 23 years to direct a team to a winning season in his first year at UC. Highly respected as one of the top defensive coaches in the country, Dantonio's Bearcats finished the 2006 regular season ranked among the NCAA leaders in six statistical categories |
JIM LEAVITT : S. Florida |
In just 10 years, Jim Leavitt has turned a non-existent program into a Bowl team when the Bulls played in the 2005 Meineke Car Care Bowl. He went from starting football from scratch to leading the program from an inaugural season in 1997 to I-A status in 2001, Conference USA in 2003 and now the BIG EAST and BCS football in 2005. After nine seasons of USF Football, Leavitt has proven that he was indeed the right man for the right job at the right time. In just five years time, Leavitt has led the program to an impressive 61-39 record. A mega-success in the first four years at the I-AA level (24 straight weeks in national polls), Leavitt and crew moved to I-A in 2001 and went 8-3, including a 35-26 win at Pittsburgh. |
JIM HARBAUGH : Stanford |
On December 19, 2006, Jim Harbaugh was named as the Head Football Coach at Stanford University. Harbaugh has spent the last three seasons (2004-06) as the head coach at the University of San Diego, leading the Toreros to Division I-AA Mid-Major national titles each of the past two campaigns. He posted an impressive three-year overall record of 29-6 (.829) at San Diego, including 11-1 campaigns each of the past two years that also included a school record 18-game win streak over the period and two Pioneer Football League championships. Harbaugh enjoyed a storied career at the University of Michigan, leading the Wolverines to three bowl games while being named Big Ten Player of the Year. In his brief coaching career, he has been a part of one Super Bowl team with the Oakland Raiders and guided his USD teams to two national championships. |
NICK SABAN : Alabama |
Nick Saban has compiled a record of 106-59-1 (.642) in 13 seasons as a head coach at Louisiana State (LSU), Michigan State and Toledo. His most recent college head coaching stint, a five-season run at LSU, produced a record of 48-16 (.750), one national championship (2003), two Southeastern Conference championships, and three SEC West Division championships. He was named the 2003 National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, earned both the Paul W. “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year Award and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award by the Football Writers Association of America. He has been named SEC Coach of the Year twice. |
FRANK BEAMER : Virginia Tech |
Frank Beamer is entering his 21st year as the head football coach at Virginia Tech. After being named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in each of Tech's first two seasons in the league, Beamer turned a young group into a cohesive unit which finished the regular season with six-straight wins, a Chick-fil-A Bowl berth and 10 victories. Tech is now one of just three Division I-A teams that have posted 10 or more wins in each of the last three seasons. Beamer, who was the consensus national coach of the year in 1999, is ranked third among active Division I-A coaches in victories with 198 over 26 seasons. His Tech teams have posted a 142-42 record over the past 14 seasons and appeared in bowl games each year during that span, a feat equaled by just three other schools. |
